Its vast lobby is stunning, with walnut floors covered with hand-woven rugs and a wonderful collection of artworks. The West Indies theme is evident in the guest rooms; bedposts are carved with impressionistic pineapple patterns, and plantation-style ceilings with exposed planks are painted white. Golf courses at Kiawah Island Golf Resort include Famous Ocean Course, Turtle Point designed by Jack Nicklaus rated 48th on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Course List. Osprey Point in the Low country designed by Tom Fazio was originally developed as a members’ only type course but now part of Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Clyde Johnston, a noted Southeastern golf course architect, designed Oak Point on the grounds of former cotton and indigo plantation. Finally there’s Cougar Point golf course which was recently rated the “Golf Course of The Year”, by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association. This course was redesigned by Gary Player in 1996.

The Ocean Course

The Ocean Course ranked 25th in Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses List and 4th on Best Public Course List. The Ocean Course hosted the dramatic ”War by the Shore,” battle decided literally by the final putt of Sunday’s final match in 1991’s Ryder Cup Matches. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort also hosted the 2007 Senior PGA and the 2012 PGA Championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. Built in 1991 by Pete Dye it’s located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere.
